Most people know the Shriners by their red fezzes and famous Shriner Hospitals for Children. What many don’t realize is that Shriners are also Masons. In fact, every Shriner must first become a Master Mason by completing the three degrees of the Blue Lodge (Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft, and Master Mason). Only then can he petition to join this concordant body.
The Shrine is considered one of the “concordant bodies” of Masonry. This means it is not part of the Blue Lodge itself but is open only to those who have already become Master Masons. Just as youth groups, Eastern Star, and Scottish or York Rite extend the Masonic journey in different ways, the Shrine offers a path that blends camaraderie with a global charitable mission.
To the public, Shriners are often recognized by their hospitals or parade appearances. To Masons, they represent another way our fraternity works to make the world better—not only by improving ourselves but by improving the lives of children and families everywhere.
